Tourist residences also offer common services and facilities, but unlike hotels, you can stay there independently.
These residences also have the possibility of requesting a classification, categorized from 1 to 5 corns , the allocation of which is based on the same basis as that of hotels.
To retain the benefit of the stars, accommodation is reviewed every 5 years .
All classified tourist residences must be registered with Atout France , a government institution.

Hotels
All hotels in France are registered with the prefecture to which they depend, which issues them with a certificate of exercise .
A hotel can only open in France upon presentation of a certificate of practice and an insurance certificate. This insurance certificate can be requested when booking.
The hotels also have the possibility of requesting a classification, categorized from 1 to 5 stars .

The awarding of stars is made on the basis of the assessment of 3 main criteria :
- the quality of comfort of the equipment,
- the quality of the services offered in the establishments,
- good practices in terms of respecting the environment and welcoming customers with disabilities.
To retain the benefit of the stars, accommodation is evaluated every 5 years .
The classification is voluntary: it is the operator who must initiate the request for classification of his establishment with Atout France .
All hotels must be registered with Atout France, a government institution.
